Major Speeding and Vehicle Seizure

Thresholds, immediate licence suspension, vehicle seizure on repeat: what the Highway Safety Code provides.

In briefMajor speeding in Quebec doubles both the points and the fine, brings an immediate 7-day licence suspension on a first offence, and — on a repeat within 10 years — a 30-day suspension with a 30-day vehicle seizure.

What are the thresholds?

Major speeding starts at 40 km/h over in a 60 km/h or lower zone, 50 km/h over in a 61-90 zone, and 60 km/h over in a 100 km/h and over zone (HSC section 299).

Suspension and seizure

First offence: licence suspended 7 days on the spot. Second within 10 years: licence suspended 30 days and vehicle seized 30 days. Penalties escalate at the 3rd and 4th offences, up to tripling the fine.

Getting your vehicle back

When seized, the vehicle is impounded at the owner's expense and only returned at the end of the seizure period. Towing and storage fees add to the fine.

Impact on licence and insurance

With doubled points (up to 36), a major speeding offence can on its own exceed a revocation threshold. Your SAAQ insurance contribution rises accordingly.
