Excessive speeding
Violations

An “excessive speeding” is defined by the degree to which the posted limit was exceeded. When speeding reaches or exceeds 40, 50 or 60 km/h, the offense moves to a higher legal category. Crown prosecutors have limited discretion to negotiate these cases, which are handled in strict compliance with public safety goals.

In Quebec, excessive speeding violations occur when a driver exceeds the posted speed limit by 40 km/h or more in urban areas, or 50 km/h or more on highways. These violations are subject to severe penalties, including hefty fines, demerit points, and possible license suspension. Repeat offences can lead to heavier penalties and have a long-term impact on your driving record.
