Major Speeding
Violations

A ‘major speeding offence’ is defined by the degree of excess over the posted limit. When the excess speed reaches or exceeds 50 km/h, the offence moves into a higher legal category. Crown prosecutors have limited discretion to negotiate these cases, and they are handled with strict adherence to public safety objectives.

In Quebec, major speeding offences occur when a driver exceeds the posted speed limit by 40 km/h or more in an urban area, or by 50 km/h or more on highways. These violations carry severe penalties, including substantial fines, demerit points, and potential license suspension. Repeat offences can lead to higher sanctions and long-term impacts on your driving record.
