Overview of the Law

Under section 422 of the Quebec Highway Safety Code, it is prohibited to drive a vehicle for a race, bet, or stake on a public road. This includes organized street races, spontaneous speed contests, and acceleration duels, even when no money or prize is involved.

  • 100 km/h on autoroutes
  • 90 km/h on concrete or asphalt highways
  • 70 km/h on gravel roads
  • 50 km/h in built-up areas

Only officially authorized events, such as regulated rallies approved by the Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports, are exempt from this rule.
Participation — whether as a driver or an organizer — is treated as a serious and deliberate violation of public safety laws.

Penalties and
Consequences

A conviction for street racing results in:

  • 12 demerit points
  • Fines between $1,000 and $3,000
  • Immediate license suspension and possible vehicle impoundment
  • Higher penalties for repeat offences, including longer suspensions and criminal charges

Street racing offences stay on your record for several years and cause major insurance premium increases.

Challenging Officer Interpretation

Police or witnesses may misinterpret overtaking or lane changes as racing behavior.

Questioning Officer Procedure

We examine whether the situation truly involved a race or simply coincidental speeding or parallel driving.

Using Video or Data Evidence

Dashcam footage, GPS data, or telemetry logs can clarify speed, distance, and lack of coordination with other vehicles.

Negotiating a Reduced Offence

Where evidence allows, charges may be reduced to a lesser infraction, avoiding severe penalties and demerit points.
